The Academic Advising Community of Practice and CACUSS are excited to announce the virtual Academic Advising Summit on April 29, 30 and May 1, 2025.

The goal of the summit is to bring together all levels of experiences and knowledge from the academic advising field to learn, share, and discuss a variety of topics of interest identified by the membership, and to showcase innovative projects and skill build along the way.

Academic advising plays a critical role in supporting students’ academic journeys, helping them navigate the intersection of educational experiences, aspirations, abilities, and life goals. Through advising, students engage in self-discovery, goal setting, and academic planning, all of which are integral to their success. As the field of academic advising evolves, advisors are facing new challenges and opportunities in supporting diverse student populations, adapting to emerging technologies, and responding to radical shifts in the post-secondary landscape.

Our Panel Presentation

Our panel presentation will share their experiences navigating today’s complex advising environment. Drawing on their insights, the session will explore how academic advisors are supporting students within the broader context of a changing post-secondary landscape, while balancing institutional goals, emerging student needs, and their own professional development.

Panelists will share practical strategies for supporting students through academic, personal, and career challenges, while fostering inclusive advising practices that reflect the diverse backgrounds and aspirations of the student body. Discussions will also cover building collaborative advising teams, addressing mental health concerns, supporting career readiness, and staying adaptable in an ever-changing academic environment. Additionally, panelists will reflect on how advising is expanding beyond traditional campus boundaries to include virtual platforms, experiential learning, and global engagement. This session will offer attendees actionable strategies and insights to inspire a forward-thinking, inclusive, and adaptable approach to academic advising.

Meet Our Featured Panelists

Moderator: Parmin Dhoot (he/him) currently works as the Embedded Student Advisor for the Honours Bachelor of Business Administration programs at Sheridan College. With over 6 years of higher education experience and an interdisciplinary MEd in Educational Research specializing in both Workplace Learning and Indigenous Education, he is dedicated to fostering learning environments where all learners and practitioners can thrive. Parmin is a former Co-Chair of the CACUSS Academic Advising Community of Practice and currently serves as a Director-at-Large on the CACUSS Board of Directors.

Kelsey Boule (she/her) is the Associate Director of Academic Advising in Student Services at Simon Fraser University. Kelsey's team leads the Back on Track program, a retention program that allows students who are Required to Withdraw to stay at SFU and continue their studies. Her team also advises undeclared students and students from special populations, including those in academic difficulty, NCAA athletes, and WUSC students. Kelsey is the course author for SFU's new student transition courses, University Prep and SFU 101 and is working on developing a campus wide early intervention program. She has a Master of Science degree from Thompson Rivers University and has been working within higher education for 10 years. She is passionate about supporting her team to deliver key retention and student success programming and strategies.

Aysha Haq, (she/her) has over 25 years’ experience working in post-secondary in Canada and the United States. She has worked as a Program Assistant, Transfer Credit Coordinator, and has over 15 years’ experience as an academic advisor in multiple faculties and departments, most recently as interim Manager of Academic Advising at Kwantlen Polytechnic University.  She is currently returned to her role as a Degree Advisor in the Faculty of Arts at KPU. She shares a passion for academic advising and works to foster an environment where advisors are equipped with up-to-date knowledge and skills to help them thrive and empower their students.  She has completed consecutive 2-year terms on NACADA Region 8 as the BC Liaison, is currently serving as the Chair of the NACADA Canada Advising Community and is a member of the 2024-26 NACADA Emerging Leaders Program.

Kerry Morrison (she/her) is the Academic Advising Manager at Ontario Tech University. She has led her team through significant changes, transitioning from a decentralized to a hybrid model that introduces a clear division between first-year and upper-year advising—anchored in consistency and intentionality. Kerry also guided her team in embracing the power (and quirks) of online platforms to enhance student connection and streamline advising services. Currently, she’s diving into the implementation of an early alert system—because catching challenges early is always better than scrambling in crisis mode. She has collaborated with dedicated professionals from institutions across Ontario to help develop a provincial core competencies framework for academic advising. Kerry holds a Master’s degree from Brock University, where her thesis focused on academic advising in a Canadian context. She is passionate about collaboration, advisor development, and guiding advising as a transformative practice. She looks forward to sharing insights, learning from others, and exploring the ever-evolving landscape of higher education.
