Topic: Navigating Complexity: Student Suicidal Ideation, Mental Health, and Systemic Challenges -

🎤 Facilitator: Jessica Williams (she/her) – Student Support Specialist, Mount Royal University

This session invites honest, courageous conversation about some of the most challenging realities we face as case managers: student suicidal ideation, serious mental health concerns, disruptive behaviours, and the tension between university systems and student needs.

Together, we will explore:

  • How we can respond more collectively to complex mental health situations.
  • What systemic changes may be needed to better support both students and frontline staff.
  • What resources, institutional shifts, and supports would help you feel more confident and   effective in your role and how you are managing the emotional demands of this work.

As part of the discussion, our facilitator will share a deeply personal case study involving student suicidal ideation, one of the most challenging one-to-one cases of her career, including reflections on navigating institutional limitations that can hinder our ability to meet students' mental health needs.

🎤 Facilitator: Jessica Williams (she/her) – Student Support Specialist, Mount Royal University

Jessica was born in Calgary, Alberta on the traditional territories of the Blackfoot Confederacy (Siksika, Kanai, Piikani). She is Indigenous by her father, who was born on the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi'kmaq Peoples in Newfoundland, and Jewish by her mother, an immigrant from England whose family settled there after fleeing Poland during WWII.

Over her 15 years of clinical and non-clinical case management, Jessica has developed specialized expertise in trauma-informed support, complex mental health, housing and homelessness, addiction, and working with youth and young adults.

This is a space for learning, reflection, and connection. Come ready to share your experiences, listen deeply, and leave feeling a little less alone in this work.
