In recognition of Consent Awareness Week, our first gathering of the 2025-2026 academic year will focus on consent education on post-secondary campuses. The affirmative model of concept, often communicated through the acronym FRIES, is widely taught through social media posts, workshops, events, and activities. Students can often recite this formulation of consent, and yet still struggle to apply these principles in real-life situations. How can we innovate our consent education programming to equip students–as well as faculty and staff–to apply the principles of affirmative consent in their lives?

Some questions to guide our discussion:
  • Where are the gaps or limits in our current consent education practices?
  • What fundamental self-awareness and interpersonal skills are needed to actually practice consent in relationships?
  • How might we / post-secondary institutions help students develop these skills while also considering the scalability and sustainability of our programming?
  • What are some promising or innovative practices that help students further develop their ability to practice consent?
  • How might a re-framing of the issue increase the relevance and impact of our "consent" programming?
